Hillsong is a popular church that has been linked to many celebrities
These include singer, Justin Bieber, actor, Chris Pratt, and even reality TV star, Kourtney Kardashian.
This clearly shows that this is no ordinary church. Here is what you need to know about the Hillsong Church.
1. It all started in Syndey, Australia: In 1978, the founders, Brian and his wife, Bobbie Houston moved from New Zealand to Syndey. There, they pastored with Brian’s father, Frank Houston at Sydney Christian Life Centre in Darlinghurst. This led to the couple starting their own church, the Hillsong Church in 1983. It was initially called Hills Christian Life Centre. It became Hillsong Church in 1999.
2. The church is heavily involved in the music and media industry: Any Christian music lover is probably a fan of songs of Hillsong Worship and Hillsong United. Chances are that you may have even heard a song from the Grammy-nominated Young & Free group. These three well-known names are all under Hillsong Music Australia, the church’s music label. Darlene
Zschech, the singer of the popular “Shout to the Lord” song is also under this label.
3. It has modern beliefs and practices:According to the church’s website, Hillsong is a “contemporary Pentecostal church” that is “positioned at the intersection of Christianity and culture.” This intersection is clearly reflected in everything from its beliefs to the fashion. Unlike the older churches whose members dress ‘churchly,’ Hillsong keeps it youthful. This means the pastor is likely to show up in distressed jeans and a T-shirt. These are just a few instances of the church’s liberal approach
4. The congregation is made up of celebrities: Hillsong church is a celebrity-magnet that attracts everyone from TV stars to models and singers.
This includes Justin Bieber, Kourtney Kardashian, her sister, Kendall Jenner, and recently, Chris Pratt.
5. It has faced a lot of criticism: Hillsong has weathered many controversies including sexual abuse allegations, cancer scandal, to criticisms over finance. The church has even been called a cult. This idea was fueled by the negative portrayal of the church in a former member’s book. In 2007, Tanya Levin wrote ‘People in Glass Houses: An Insider’s Story of a Life In and Out of Hillsong.’
