Argentina fall out of qualification spots; Uruguay miss chance; Brazil held

Argentina's World Cup hopes are on life support after a 0-0 home draw against Peru in CONMEBOL qualifying on Thursday.

The result places Jorge Sampaoli's out of the qualification spots, dropping the Albiceleste to sixth in the table with just one round to play.

Playing in his first official match at the historic Bombonera stadium, Lionel Messi nearly opened the scoring midway through the first half, flashing his shot just wide of the post from outside the box after a superb run.
They will finish their qualification campaign on Tuesday.
Uruguay missed a chance at qualification for Russia 2018 after a 0-0 stalemate inVenezuela on Thursday.



The second-placed Uruguayans needed only a win in Tachira, but couldn't find a breakthrough against a resolute Venezuela side at the Estadio Pueblo Nuevo.

Uruguay will have their chance to book their World Cup trip at home on Tuesday, Oct. 10 against Bolivia.



Meanwhile, Brazil and Bolivia played an entertaining 0-0 draw in a game that did nothing to change either side's World Cup fate.

The draw marks just the second in World Cup qualifying under Tite and second straight for the Brazilians, who still sit atop the South American table.
